|A fabulous 18th century cottage set in the tiny, pretty village of Thwaite, in upper Swaledale, Joiner's Cottage is a high-quality haven from the cares of your workaday life. Originally the joiner's shop, the cottage is newly refurbished, making it a spacious, lovely home with character touches such as old beams and a stone fireplace. New windows and doors to the revamped south-facing terrace (now enclosed), multi-fuel stove and contemporary furnishings make the cottage welcoming and snug. Fresh decor, a lovely kitchen with high-quality granite surfaces and luxury bath/shower rooms complete the feeling of a home from home. Marvellous views from the living room and suntrap (enclosed) terrace look to the wonderful hills nearby. Sit and relax to the soothing murmur of Stockdale Beck after exploring one of the many walks from the door including the Coast to Coast and Pennine Way walks. As Wainwright said, "...the promised land of Swaledale, the foot of our personal rainbow, journey's end." Sorry, no smoking. Sleeps 6 . Pet-friendly! Free Wifi!

Thwaite is a lovely, friendly village, overlooked by magnificent Kisdon. Plenty of walks direct from the village, along the Pennine Way to Keld, or over Great Shunner Fell to Wensleydale, or gentle rambles through the meadows amongst Swaledale sheep and lambs. The Kearton Country Hotel, just yards from the cottage, is highly regarded for food and drink and a mobile fish and chip van calls on Fridays, 8 - 8.30pm.
Muker is a mile away, with a village shop, Swaledale Woollens (items all knitted locally using Swaledale sheep wool), gallery/craft shop and good pub, with enthusiastic new young owners, the Farmer's Arms (dog-friendly). Keld is 2 miles further updale, with Keld Lodge serving food and drink and ice creams and refreshments at Rukins, Park Lodge. Lovely walks if you take the bus (Dales and District) to Keld and walk back to Thwaite, Muker, or further, to Gunnerside.
Tearoom and bistro (Wed and Sat eves, booking required) and local pub, both serving excellent food, at Gunnerside (takeaway curry at tearoom on Monday evenings). Also, working smithy and museum (summer hours opening). The Punch Bowl at Low Row, 7 miles, and the CB Inn, Arkengarthdale, are gastropubs serving upmarket food and drink and there are numerous pubs, tearooms, village shops, garages, Post Office, organic bakery and Swaledale Outdoors for hiking equipment at Reeth, 11 miles (and a Friday market).
Hawes is 6 miles over the Buttertubs pass, in Wensleydale, with a variety of shops, the Ropemaker's, antique shops, banks (with cashpoints), garage and little industrial estate (the Good Life is great for food, logs, practically everything!), Tuesday market. Supermarkets at Leyburn, 20 miles, Richmond, 23 miles, Co-op, Kirkby Stephen, 11 miles and 24 hr Tesco's at Catterick Garrison, 23 miles (which delivers, as do Asda, Sainsburys and a local firm, Granary Foods) . Hazel Brow Organic Farm can provide a welcome hamper for your arrival (Low Row) and Ghyllfoot Tearoom (Gunnerside) frozen "bistro-style" meals - see FAQs.
Bike hire at Fremington, 13 miles, recycling facilities at Muker and Keld. The only nearby mobile signal is Orange, but please note, this runs out below Muker; there is no mobile signal at all in Thwaite or immediate surrounding area. There is a payphone in Thwaite.
